Frames have multiple different types of materials and components that can be damaged in both fire and flood damage, along with poor storage. Water and humidity can cause the molding on frames to deteriorate and pop off. Molding is typically made from plaster or gesso. Those same molding pieces are adhered to the wood frame. When water or humidity reaches the wood frame, the wood fibers expand and contract.
This gold frame was in a residential fire and suffered significant water damage and minor soot damage. Some of the pieces that came off the frame were salvaged and we were able to reattach them. Anything that was missing was recreated from making a mold of another intact section. We then used that casting as a new piece.
The new sections were attached and smoothed out by sanding, carving and floating plaster to make a seamless transition from old to new. Once the pieces were in place, they were gilded (painted) to match the existing finish. The artwork now has a beautiful frame to enhance its’ beauty as it was originally intended.
