This painting on paper was framed with standard glass without any special coatings. The glass broke during a fall and caused scratches and paint loss to the surface of the piece. Paper is not as forgiving to work with as canvas and needs to be treated with great care while undergoing restoration.
The first step was a dry surface clean of the artwork. Dry surface cleaning gets rid of any grime and possible glass chips that are sitting and waiting to cause more damage. Next, the paint needs to be touched up to reduce the visibility of the damage. In this step, good lighting, a delicate touch and an eye for color matching are key for precise in-painting.
In the end, the touch-ups were successful. Lastly, the painting on paper will be framed with conservation-grade glass to give it ultimate protection and aesthetic appeal.
Not all glass is treated equally! Standard glass typically does not have glazing protecting documents and artwork from light pollution and causes a glare. In other words, glare means reduced visibility of artwork. Conservation-grade glass has glazing that protects art from UV rays and allows you to see the artwork, not yourself, in the reflection.
